Shop! Mary Portas reviews Ugg, Covent Garden, London

January 4th, 2010

Hey, let me share some fashion news about UGG Boots, it’s something about australia UGG Boots, keep reading:

When the US corporation Deckers Outdoor bought Ugg Australia in 1995, it probably thought it had made a sensible addition to its portfolio of footwear brands. Ugg was positioned as high-end luxury footwear, best known for its sheepskin boots, favoured by Californian surfers. In 2000 a wily PR person sent some to Oprah Winfrey, aware of the power of her endorsement. She loved them so much that she bought 350 pairs for her staff and featured the Ultra boot on her Favorite Things show. Ugg went mega, becoming the footwear of choice for A-listers and wannabes.

Today, in Britain, opinions are divided. Teamed with a bomber jacket, miniskirt and black tights, the boots form part of the staple uniform for a generation of young women. Sloaney girls love wearing them with jeans tucked in. Some members of the fashion press wear them for comfort (although they take them off at the door before the shows). But many people hate them – let’s call it the Marmite effect. And as they’re not famous for giving you great legs, men are not keen either.

Ugg opened its first British standalone store, in the Westfield centre, London, last autumn. People queued to get in, and recent figures show that Ugg sales were up 57 per cent on last year. (Is this brand recession proof?) Shortly after that debut another shop opened in Covent Garden and the queues formed again. I decided to join them.

The windows Covent Garden is a great location, but I was surprised Ugg had chosen a unit with the traffic of Long Acre and brands such as M&S and Next for company, rather than cool Neal Street. One window displayed three pairs of frumpy sandals; another, three pairs of the new season’s ultra-bright sheepskin boots – eye-catching colours let down by a dull display.

Shopability The shop is a mix of brick walls, wood and bright lighting, with minimal merchandise displayed on wood and glass shelves. It’s easy to work your way around, although a bit narrow – men’s to the left, women’s to the right and children’s at the back. Pride of place is unsurprisingly given to the trademark sheepskin boot. These days they come in fuchsia, turquoise and lime-green (as well as the original tan, chestnut and black) and you can choose from knitted, canvas or sheepskin exteriors. It’s a classic style that has proven staying power. The sandal range (launched in Australia last September) is another matter. I just didn’t get it. And at £120 a pop for a basic sandal, or £35 for a sheepskin-lined flip-flop, the new collections also felt too expensive.

Was I being served? The store wasn’t that busy on the day of my visit, although I know that’s not the norm here. What did mystify me was the number of boxes the salesgirls seemed to bring out for each customer. I know that ‘my first Uggs’ is probably an early fashion highlight of a girl’s life, and she’ll probably want to try on every pair in every colourway, but I wondered if this explained the queues. When I arrived there were five staff on duty, though three of them mysteriously vanished. Those who were left tried valiantly to cope with the customers but some inevitably drifted off. One woman ahead of me who did manage to get served bought her daughter a pair of boots and ballet-style pumps, racking up a total sale of £200.

Did I buy? In a word, Marmite.

Verdict Deckers clearly made a wise investment: Ugg is now a global phenomenon. It’s not a product I would choose. I don’t feel it has extended the brand terribly well into new areas, nor is the storefit particularly impressive. But I take my hat off to Ugg’s entrepreneurial flair. It has created a product with hugely broad appeal and which is likely to be around for some time.

Dutch girls and UGG boots

December 31st, 2009

Hi everybody, I would like to see your view on this fashion statements in the streets named UGG Boots.. Why Dutch women wants to look like cave women? Wearing them in the summer as well, feet must get soaked in the rainy day and they must be pretty bad for the feet not offering any suport.. its like walking in the slippers… And what is this leggins fashion? Why do they have to wear leggins with their skirts all the time, show off some flesh girls, it looks awfull! Generally I think Dutch women are nice tall quite fit but they dress too casually to my liking. I come from Eastern Europe where women are trying to enhance their feminine side. I was quite shocked and so do my friends how too casually even in track suit bottoms the girls go outside… What do you think about the way Dutch women dress the UGG Boots?

Ugg boot fetishist

An UGG Boots-obsessed pervert who harassed a group of schoolgirls using social networking websites has been described as “sexually deviant” and jailed for four years.

Mark Southeby, 38, infiltrated a group of girls at a secondary school in the Leeds area by assuming other children’s identities on sites such as Facebook, MSN and MySpace.

Southeby, of Dutton Way, Iver, Buckinghamshire, pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court to three counts of inciting sexual activity involving a 15-year-old girl and six offences of harassing teenage girls.

The court heard he developed an online relationship with the 15-year-old girl, telling her repeatedly that he loved her and wanted her to be his girlfriend, and suggested she took part in a series of sex acts.

He obtained the girl’s mobile telephone number and plagued her with calls in the early hours of the morning after she blocked him from contacting her on the MSN site, leaving her feeling “frightened”.

Unemployed Southeby also discussed drugging another young girl and had bought chloroform over the internet in the past. The court heard this other girl was the subject of a “concerted campaign” by the defendant, which included impersonating her father in order to obtain information about her from her school and football club.

Judge Kershaw said the girl was “frightened and worried that someone had become obsessed with her”.

Southeby’s mobile phone was found to contain an enormous number of “non-indecent” photographs of teenage girls wearing UGG Boots and the court heard he asked a number of the girls questions about this sort of footwear. He has admitted having a fetish involving the popular sheepskin boots. Psychiatric reports found Southeby had “abnormal levels of sex drive” and a previous court hearing was told he said he would benefit from chemical castration.

Sentencing Southeby, Judge Jennifer Kershaw QC said: “It seems to me the defendant presents a very worrying picture. The defendant is not only sexually deviant, he is devious, the offending is repeated and it was resourceful.”

Southeby was also sentenced to an extended licence period of eight years, which Judge Kershaw said would enable him to be monitored after his release.

UGG Boots social news

December 24th, 2009

Hi all, let me tell you an UGG Boots social news this time. I’m not sure if you like it, just browse this and close it if you hate it. Let’s go.

An UGG Boots-obsessed pervert who harassed a group of schoolgirls using social networking websites was today described as ’sexually deviant’ as he was jailed for four years.

Judge Jennifer Kershaw QC told Leeds Crown Court Mark Southeby, 38, was ‘devious’ and ‘resourceful’ after he infiltrated a group of girls at a secondary school in the Leeds area by assuming other children’s identities on sites such as Facebook, MSN and MySpace.

Southeby, of Dutton Way, Iver, Buckinghamshire, earlier pleaded guilty to three counts of inciting sexual activity involving a 15-year-old girl and six offences of harassing teenage girls.

The court heard he developed an online relationship with the 15-year-old girl, telling her repeatedly that he loved her and wanted her to be his girlfriend, and suggested she took part in a series of sex acts.

He obtained the girl’s mobile telephone number and plagued her with calls in the early hours of the morning after she blocked him from contacting her on the MSN site, leaving her feeling ‘frightened’.

Unemployed Southeby also discussed drugging another young girl and had bought chloroform over the internet in the past.

The court heard this other girl was the subject of a ‘concerted campaign’ by the defendant, which included impersonating her father in order to obtain information about her from her school and football club.

Judge Kershaw said the girl was ‘frightened and worried that someone had become obsessed with her’.

Southeby’s mobile phone was found to contain an enormous number of ‘non-indecent’ photographs of teenage girls wearing UGG Boots and the court heard he asked a number of the girls questions about this sort of footwear.

He has admitted having a fetish involving the popular sheepskin boots.

Obsessed: Southeby, who had a fetish for UGG Boots(file picture), ‘harassed girls over the internet’

Psychiatric reports found Southeby had ‘abnormal levels of sex drive’ and a previous court hearing was told he said he would benefit from chemical castration.

Sentencing Southeby, Judge Kershaw said: ‘It seems to me the defendant presents a very worrying picture.

‘The defendant is not only sexually deviant, he is devious, the offending is repeated and it was resourceful.’

Speaking about the effect Southeby’s actions had had on his victims, the judge added: ‘One can imagine the level of distress and upset these events have caused in the families of these young girls.’

Southeby was also sentenced to an extended licence period of eight years, which Judge Kershaw said would enable him to be monitored after his release.

Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Ian Scott, of West Yorkshire Police, said police had passed information concerning Southeby to other UK forces.

Mr Scott said contact details of other groups of girls had been found on Southeby’s phone and an investigation was ongoing.

The detective said the families of the victims involved in this case welcomed today’s sentence.

He said: ‘The concern is still there of what has happened but they do feel a lot of relief through the sentence.’

Mr Scott said children should tell their parents or school if they had any suspicions about people on social networking sites.

Giving advice to parents, he added: ‘Put measures in place of awareness for the children.

‘Talk to them openly about it, explain the dangers, advise them not to put personal details on social networking sites, mobile telephone numbers, addresses, and make sure they know who they’re accepting as friends.’

UGG Boots in preppy power

December 23rd, 2009

So, What about the preppy power, you should knew something about this before. But do you know the UGG Boots in preppy power? Follow me:

Preppy is a word that makes the average fashionista flinch. It’s those associations: bankers in seersucker jackets; public-school boys running riot in Rock in stick-up-collared polo shirts; girls who would kill to be at the same polo match as Prince Harry, in their uniform of pale-pink hoodies and denim miniskirts, accessorised with blonde hair and ankle Uggs. It’s Sloane rangers. It’s sporty, county, gap-year and it’s been about as far as you can get from the cutting edge of style. Yet rapidly growing numbers of people are embracing the preppy look — whether it’s stripy boat-neck T-shirts, argyle sweaters, brogues or cotton pea coats. Look closely and you’ll see preppy is having a makeover right under our noses.

It’s still the default look of every Sophie and Hugo on the planet (Jack Wills, provider of the logo-heavy collegiate wear that is their unofficial uniform, saw a sales increase of 100% last year). But the difference is that, now, all kinds of other style tribes are cherry-picking from the preppy canon — that mixture of American sporty casual wear from shops such as Abercrombie & Fitch and British old-school classics — and wearing it in new ways. When types you would never have dreamt of labelling preppy (Alexa Chung, say) start wearing clothes you definitely think of as preppy (cardigans, blazers, penny loafers, ankle socks), you are talking about a wholesale rebranding.

As to why preppy suddenly has such a broad appeal, that’s easy. It’s the antibling look — clean and classic to the core. So, naturally, it’s heading mainstream at the same time as we are tiring of

Wags and multi bags and the excesses of the red carpet. It’s easy to pull off preppy without having to invest much. Tick. It’s uncomplicated and eminently wearable, requiring no inside fashion knowledge or clever styling. Another tick. And preppy doesn’t date. Blazers and pea coats and stripy shirts exist in their own fashion limbo for all time. Double tick.

Preppy has something else going for it. There is an extended line of wholesome preppy-wearers, from Katharine Hepburn all the way to the present day, that gives it a kind of authenticity that speaks to a generation bored with gimmickry and clothes that last only a month or a wash. Preppy is the antithesis of trashy. Like a cashmere jumper borrowed from Dad, it has a whiff of permanence. In the end, this is about a shift away from the fickle diktats of fashion to the appeal of stuff that feels like it belongs in real life, not merely on a catwalk. You can see why it’s catching on.

This is the Jack Wills posse. Younger ones wear a hoodie and denim miniskirt. Older, grungier sisters wear a cotton checked shirt as a dress, saggy cardigan, black opaque tights and rolled-down UGG Boots. Note the roughed-up hair (though beautifully conditioned), the bitten, painted nails and the faded tattoo (she got it travelling).

POWER PREPPY

The grown-up, glamour end of preppy. It’s preppy with an injection of designer, and you won’t see any logos anywhere. Classic looks include a dark jacket with a white shirt and bootcut denim for smart-casual, and, for casual, sawn-off long white denim shorts, a vest and a pashmina.

Poster girls Michelle Obama, Jennifer Aniston, or, if you like your preppy a bit LA, Elle Macpherson.

Defining elements The juicy-coloured statement cardigan, white shirt, capri pants, white jeans.

Favourite labels J Crew, Gap, Boden for downtime (must be worn with a lot of care), Derek Lam for designer.

Most likely to be seen wearing them At home, on holiday, at the weekend, on the school run.

Best look Crisp shirt with ankle-grazer jeans and ballet pumps; bright-coloured cardigan with full skirt.

A look too far Madras checked jackets for men, seersucker trousers and canvas belts featuring ducks, bermuda shorts.

PUBLIC-SCHOOL PREPPY

Poster people Prince Harry, Chelsy Davy.

Defining elements UGGS (still, even in summer) or white canvas plimsolls, the gratuitous scarf (this year in cotton plaid).

Favourite labels Jack Wills, Gap, Crew Clothing.

Most likely to be seen wearing them In gangs on the King’s Road, Rock, Polzeath, Aldeburgh, the northeast coast of Corfu, traipsing round John Lewis with their mothers.

Best look Denim shorts and pretty chemisey top with ribbed cotton tights and white plimsolls.

A look too far Upturned collars or rugby shirts on girls or boys, low-riding jeans with stripy boxers on show, cricket sweaters (unless you are playing cricket).

FASHION PREPPY

This is doing the look with irony, which means taking the most traditional of preppy signatures — penny loafers, ankle socks, Aertex shirts with logos, stripy men’s shirts, wax jackets, hair bands, Hunters, heirloom brooches — and wearing them as a preppy never would. Alexa Chung puts loafers with minidresses, and wellies with denim shorts; Chloë Sevigny likes a blazer over hot pants, or a neat pair of khaki shorts and a boob tube.

Poster girls Alexa Chung, Chloë Sevigny

Defining elements Vintage sundresses, knee and ankle socks, brogues, loafers, two-tone pumps.

Favourite labels Anything vintage, Luella, Marc Jacobs, American Apparel for sweatshirts.

Most likely to be seen wearing them When you’d least expect. At a black-tie party, rock festival, their best friend’s wedding.

Best look Loafers with knee socks and a super-mini designer dress.

A look too far Hunters in town (note, fashion preppy knows to keep hers for Glastonbury), head-to-toe Belstaff.

PIT-BULL PREPPY

This is a pimped-up version of Public School Preppy, with, possibly, a pit bull on a designer lead. Pit-bull preppy has picked up where the designer tracksuit left off. It’s big on sporty signature looks (hoodies, baseball caps), but not so big on the wholesome aesthetic, or the sports.

Poster people Danny Cipriani for the boys (it’s all those sweatshirts teamed with diamond earrings), and the chicks from The Hills or Katie Price in equestrian mode for the girls. Think soft-top sports car meets sportswear or Page Three meets pony club.

Defining elements White track pants, white gilets, Uggs, nail extensions and ponytail.

Favourite labels Jack Wills, Topshop, Asos, H&M.

Most likely to be seen wearing them On the high street.

Best look Rolled-down track pants and padded gilet with nothing underneath.

A look too far Thong riding up above the waistband of trackie bottoms.

EURO PREPPY

Euro preppies are the only people wearing the look precisely as the original Sloane rangers used to: sans irony. Only, of course, they are 10 times more polished, and whereas the original Sloane might have been covered in jack russell hairs and barely-there make-up, your Euro preppy is immaculate, wears only cashmere and is allergic to animals.

Poster girls Carla Bruni, with her cable-knit cashmere and loafers; Kate Middleton, with her Spanish riding boots and tweedy shooting kit. (To be fair, Kate is more neo-Sloane ranger, but, for obvious reasons, the Euro preppy holds her in high esteem.)

Defining elements Cable-knit cashmere in pastel colours, velvet scrunchies, riding boots worn over jeans.

Favourite labels Barbour, Hackett, Thomas Pink.

Most likely to be seen wearing them All the time, head to toe, all over Europe and South Kensington.

Best look Stripy shirt under a fitted tweed jacket, and lots of rings.

A look too far Designer riding clothes as mufti.

An odd couple in love

December 21st, 2009

Well, this UGG Boots Fashion news maybe overdue, but I was touched by the love, so, follow me to the love about the UGGS.

SHE has chosen to take his name and they believe in old-fashion romance, but there is nothing conventional about Derryn and Chanel Hinch’s marriage.

The couple have separate homes, never spend an entire night together and say they will never cohabit.

“People don’t understand it, but it works well,” Hinch says.

After three failed marriages, Hinch, 65, had vowed never to get hitched again and Chanel decided to never marry.

But six months after they started dating they were married in February, 2006.

“I just fell in love with her. I felt I didn’t want anything else in my life,” Hinch says.

The “human headline”, known for his hard-hitting interviews and stance on exposing paedophiles, is putty in his tall blonde wife’s hands.

“I know it sounds really mushy, but the other night I saw the Jack Nicholson movie As Good As It Gets and heard the line, ‘You make me want to be a better man’ and I thought, ‘I just love that and yep, it’s very true’.”

Speaking openly for the first time about their relationship, Mrs Hinch says the high-profile radio presenter and author makes her happy.

“He has an amazing outlook on life. He’s optimistic about everything. Every morning I’ll ring him when I wake and he’s always happy and enthusiastic,” she says. “He’s a lovely person to be around.”

Mrs Hinch, 48, runs her own private investigation business.

“Ironically, Chanel does for a living what we used to do on the Hinch program — catching welfare and insurance frauds,” Hinch says.

Then he jokes: “With her private investigation company, I’ll never be able to have an affair.”

They live in the same South Yarra apartment building, but 10 floors apart.

The first time they went out, Mrs Hinch made it clear she would never have children, get married or live with a partner.

“She changed her mind on one of them, which was great,” Hinch says.

They met in their apartment building lift, but did not date for some months because they were with other people.

But not long after their relationship started, Hinch asked Chanel — over lunch in St Kilda — to marry him.

“It wasn’t romantic, but he’s made up for it every day since,” Mrs Hinch says.

“The reason I didn’t want to be married was because you had to live with someone traditionally and there’s not many people who would accept that (I didn’t want that).

“Derryn was fine with everything.”

While in the early days Mrs Hinch demanded DFDs — Derryn Free Days — that did not last for long and they now see each other every day.

“It’s actually a very romantic way to live,” Mrs Hinch says.

“The main thing is we are together because we want to be, it’s not because we have to be.”

After Hinch signs off from his afternoon show on 3AW, he stops at Mrs Hinch’s apartment.

Sometimes they will go out for dinner, other nights they will chat for a while and then he will return to his pad.

Saturday nights are “date night” and Hinch picks up his wife from her apartment for dinner.

They always observe one rule: “You always wake up in your own bed.”

They concede it is an unconventional arrangement, one they are regularly defending and explaining, particularly because Mrs Hinch lives with a friend, Fiona.

“She’s part of the family, along with Scrappy Muttley Hinch (their dog),” Hinch says.

“It couldn’t work if you were young and had children or if you couldn’t afford it.”

Hinch says the couple’s beloved dog is set to get a profile of his own when they launch a pet products range later this year.

“Scrappy is going to be more famous than me and definitely more well-liked,” Hinch says.

He jokes that residents in their building are used to seeing him move between their apartments in his bathrobe.

“Because I did all the Kellogg’s commercials people have gotten used to seeing me getting around in my dressing gown and UGG Boots in the lift. It’s nothing unusual,” he says.

One of the residents is radio rival Andy Lee. The Hamish and Andy Show is dominating the ratings in Hinch’s time slot.

“The worst thing is they’re such nice blokes,” Hinch says.

Hinch is facing charges of breaching court orders by publicly naming two paedophiles.

He faces 12 months in jail and a substantial fine for each of the five charges against him.

Hinch spent 12 days in jail in 1985 after identifying a paedophile priest.

“I worry for Derryn. I’d be devastated (if he were jailed),” Mrs Hinch says.
